On the brink of a 3 game winning streak, the St. Louis Rams stumbled and fumbled their way to an unbelievable defeat at the hands of their nemesis, the Seattle Seahawks by the score of 24-19.
Backup QB, Gus Frerotte, in for Marc Bulger who suffered a 1st quarter concussion, fumbled the snap at the 1 yard line, with 30 ticks left on the clock, ending the Rams opportunity for victory.
Interestingly enough, the Rams led 19-7 at half time and appeared to be on a path to another win. The Rams defense held up their end of the bargain, sacking Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck six times, and started the Rams scoring with a 1st quarter safety.
But the Rams anemic offense (a consistent problem this season) failed to score in the red zone on more than one occasion, dooming the Rams to their ninth loss of the season.
Seemingly the Rams 2007 theme of "I Believe" has deteriorated into "Unbelievable". Unbelievable that a team with so much promise and talent has failed to meet the expectations of fans who long for the "Greatest Show on Turf" days of old.
That won't happen this season. However, Marshall Faulk's number 28 will be retired during halftime at the Rams Thursday, December game versus the Steelers.
For now, that's about as close as the Rams will come to greatness. But there's always next year.
